The ITI annual conference „Conflict & Care“ addresses the potential of conflict towards transformation while considering care as a crucial perspective and practice. Considering hierarchies and power within the performing arts and its institutions, it aims at creating an empowering space from marginalized points of view.
How can we disagree as we take care of each other and move towards transformational processes within the performing arts and its institutions?
Discussions around power and dominance often are shaped by unhealthy and power-upholding dynamics. Wishing for controversy, accountability, and repair, the conference brings together cultural workers and artists presenting their work at the festival, mentoring at the ITI Academy, or transforming the German art scenes. In panel and roundtable discussions with the audience, they share their expertise and debate: What are conflict dynamics that uphold power and dominance? How to create and take up space from marginalized perspectives? How to give away power and be part of transformational processes? How to embed accountability and repair in disagreement?
In a panel discussion, Chiaki Soma, Mike van Graan and Nora Amin, moderated by Melmun Bajarchuu, will discuss the role of conflict in transformative processes. In two rounds with a total of seven roundtables, Alexandra Diaz Loo, Carole Karemera, Carolina Mendonça, Ferdaouss Adda, Gerald Odil, Koleka Putuma and Tessa Hart share perspectives, issues and methods of transformation and care.

Summary and Ending Statements
Conflict & Care: dispute as a part of transformation within the performing arts and its institutions is this year’s Annual Conference of the ITI and takes place in the frame of Theater der Welt 2023. It is curated by Berfin Orman and Nora Tormann, Fellows of the ITI Academy, and organized with the support of the ITI.
The conference brings together the diverse perspectives of marginalised actors. All participants are asked to speak and act autonomously and self-critically. We strive for accessibility for all actors, which is not fully realisable in current structures.
The conference will be held mainly in English. In both roundtable rounds there will be one session each in German.
The venue is the Chagallsaal, Schauspiel Frankfurt (entrance Willy-Brandt-Platz).
The ITI Annual Conference is part of the ITI programme at Theater der Welt 2023.
