Open Call: Forum Theaterübersetzung

Die Welt/Bühne is a platform for international contemporary drama at the Residenztheater in Munich. Each season, three to four playwrights from around the world are invited to spend several months in residence working on play projects. These are presented in readings or included in the Residenztheater's repertoire.

The Residenztheater Munich and the International Theatre Institute are looking for a (young) translator of dramatic texts from English, French and Ukrainian for the FORUM THEATERÜBERSETZUNG, which is organized within the framework of the Welt/Bühne.

The translation of dramatic texts into German and the exchange about contemporary forms of staging are the focus of the FORUM. The subject of the work will be the translation of plays by Deepika Arwind (India, writing in English), Odile Gakire Katese (Rwanda, writing in French) and Oleksandr Seredin (Ukraine, writing in Ukrainian), which are being produced within the framework of Welt/Bühne. In addition, the organizers will offer a seminar on the special issues of translations for the theater, editing of translations and participation in the events of the World/Stage in Munich.

April 25: submission of the working version of the translation

May 5 and 6: seminar and editing with the translator Barbara Christ in Berlin or Munich

10 May: submission of the final translations

June 23-25: Reading/staging of the plays as part of the Welt/Bühne at the Residenztheater Munich

We are especially looking forward to applications from young translators with first experiences in literary or dramatic translation. For the selected translators, the costs for travel and accommodation in connection with the seminar and the readings will be covered. Depending on the length of the play, a fee of up to €1,500 will be paid for the translation. This includes the royalty for the public reading.

Please check if you are available at the indicated times and send your application with a letter of motivation (no longer than one page), two samples of your work, a bibliography, and information about your professional background to Andrea Zagorski / a.zagorski@iti-germany.de by February 20, 2023.
