The online series WERKRAUM aims to discuss and deepen individual questions from the practice of translation. This time, the focus is on theatrical translation from German into the different Spanish language variants of Latin America. Specifically, we want to approach the question of how far translators into Latin American Spanish can do justice to the existing language variants by means of text work.
We invite translators from German, especially translators into Spanish from Latin America, as well as interested theater professionals. The working language will be German, and the talks will be moderated by translator Barbara Christ.

In GRM Brainfuck - The So-Called Musical, Sibylle Berg gives language to dystopian end-times discourses with her usual sarcastic precision. In doing so, she draws on her own prose work and uses elements of the musical.
We will begin by looking at the playwright Sibylle Berg, discuss the play in its structure, take a look at the world premiere production by Sebastian Nübling, and work on selected passages from the text.

In Nora Abdel-Maksoud's fast-paced dialogue piece Jeeps, it shines through that the author is an actress/director. Pointe density and strongly marked character language make it a feast for translators:inside.
Caren Jeß's plays are idiosyncratic, poetic compositions. In Eleos. Eine Empörung in 36 Miniaturen (An Indignation in 36 Miniatures), the author weaves together a multitude of very different, virtuously crafted voices that need to be reproduced.
We work on selected passages from both pieces - always against the background of the options in the different Spanish language variants of Latin America.

Both days are linked in terms of content, but can also be attended individually.
Registration is requested for participation. Some preparation is also necessary: Manuscripts of the aforementioned three workshop pieces will be sent to all registrants beginning in early January. To get started with the text work, all participants should have read the plays and made first rough translations of some (few) passages marked there.
The initiators of the project are the translators Claudia Cabrera (Mexico) and Monika von Moldoványi (Chile). The event is organized by the International Theater Institute (ITI Germany) in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Mexico.
